Hilo has an abundance of bookstores, galleries, theaters, restaurants and shops, but it also has the modern conveniences, like supermarkets and chain stores, such as Wal-Mart, Borders, Ross’, etc. There are also wonderful Farmer’s Markets, where you can find locally grown produce and flowers, the freshest fish and seafood, and a variety of local arts and crafts. You can spend the afternoon visiting the Hilo Art Museum, or spend an elegant evening at one of their sponsored exhibitions, dances or special events.
Hilo town is home to the famous Merrie Monarch Festival, which is considered to be the world's premier forum for dancers of all ages to display their skills in the ancient art of hula. The three-day hula competition has received worldwide recognition for its historic and cultural significance.
The University of Hawaii campus in Hilo offers four-year degree programs in a variety of subjects. UH Hilo is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
If you love flowers and gardening, you’ll want to check out the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden at Onomea Bay. They have a vast variety of rare and exotic plants from all over the world – currently more than 2000 species. And, if you don’t mind a little rain – about 70” a year - Hilo is perfect for those who enjoy fishing, growing orchids, or just want a quieter, more “Old Hawaii” style of life.
Just south of Hilo is the little village of Pahoa with great restaurants, art galleries, shops and boutiques. You can have a fun day just exploring Pahoa and enjoying the funky, laid-back atmosphere.
Further south is the Volcanoes National Park. You can drive around the Chain of Craters Road and see incredible volcanic formations from your car, or hike within the park if you’re more adventurous. Visit the park center and the Volcano Art Gallery, or hike down to the current lava flows, depending on lava conditions.
To the north is the Hamakua Coast, where you can take a scenic drive through former sugar cane plantation lands, now planted with eucalyptus trees and dotted with numerous small ginger and papayas farms. The Hamakua Coast is a stunningly beautiful place – once you’ve been there, it will stay in your memory forever.
Besides being a rare surviving example of a Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo's special charms. The local term, "mixed plate", (which primarily describes a variety of local food available for lunch, all on one plate), also describes the impact made by the various Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders and Europeans on Hilo's varied culture of today. All these groups blend in the faces and language of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse cultures, its small scale, and its friendliness make Hilo the perfect town to call home.
